Since there is no universal definition of the metabolic syndrome in children we have used a cMetS score as suggested in a recent publication on the IDEFICS study . The cMetS score was calculated summing age and sex standardized z-scores of WC, HOMA index, HDL-C, TRG, systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) according to following formula by Ahrens et al. : cMetS score = z WC + (z SBP + z DBP)/2 + (z TRG − z HDL)/2 + z HOMA. The components used to calculate cMetS The IDEFICS study is the first study to investigate the association between proxy-reported daily food intake, energy intake and energy density of foods and BMI z-score in 2–9-year-old European children.

ISCED: International Standard Classification of Education. KINDL: Kinder Lebensqualität Fragebogen questionnaire. SDQ: Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire In the multivariable adjusted model, the strongest significant association with IDEFICS study participation was parental Swedish background (odds ratio (OR) = 1.91, 95% confidence interval (CI) (1.48-2.47) followed by parents having high education OR 1.80, 95% CI (1.02-3.16) and being married or co-habiting OR 1.75 95% CI (1.38-2.23). The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate children’s diet, BMI z-score, and parental feeding practices (PFPs), in relation to mutans streptococci (MS) count, psychosocial well-being and children’s BMI trajectory, as well as exploring the effect of the intervention in the IDEFICS (Identification and prevention of dietary- and lifestyle-induced health effects in children and infants) study on diets of families five years after the intervention.

The prevalence of metabolic syndrome is highest among obese children. All definitions classify a small percentage of thin or normal weight children as being affected. The metabolic syndrome score shows a positive trend with age, particularly regarding the upper percentiles of the score.

Insights gained by the IDEFICS study. The IDEFICS study, authored by Jiménez-Pavón and associates, uses more than 3,000 two- to nine-year-old children from eight European countries to determine the relationships between objectively-monitored PA and a clustered CVD risk score. In the multivariable adjusted model, the strongest significant association with IDEFICS study participation was parental Swedish background (odds ratio (OR) = 1.91, 95% confidence interval (CI) (1.48-2.47) followed by parents having high education OR 1.80, 95% CI (1.02-3.16) and being married or co-habiting OR 1.75 95% CI (1.38-2.23). The IDEFICS study started in September 2006 and ended in February 2012 after a prolongation of 6 months. Since it was assumed that high quality of life indicates lower stress level and the ability to cope with stress, the IDEFICS guideline panel took a well-being stress score as an indicator of stress coping. CONCLUSION: The IDEFICS intervention was relatively able to prevent unfavourable changes in ST and light PA in schools with a medium and high intervention process score. Further process evaluation research is needed to obtain a more profound picture of the IDEFICS intervention process. The HDAS was developed as a composite score to reflect the adherence to the healthy dietary guidelines common across 2016-11-02 Adherence to international recommendations was converted into a composite score ranging from 0 (none) to 6 (adhering to all). ISCED: International Standard Classification of Education. KINDL: Kinder Lebensqualität Fragebogen questionnaire. SDQ: Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire Background This study investigates prospective associations of anthropometrical and lifestyle indices with insulin resistance (IR) in European children from the IDEFICS cohort. Insulin resistance (IR) is a growing concern in childhood obesity and a central aspect of the metabolic syndrome (MS). It most likely represents the link between obesity and type 2 diabetes.
